How do you convert HEIC to JPG?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 and on Macs since macOS High Sierra — it stores images at roughly half the file size of JPEG at the same visual quality, but most non-Apple software can't open it. Converting HEIC to JPG produces a universally compatible file you can email, upload to any service, or open in any image editor. This converter decodes HEIC via the libheif WebAssembly codec — your photos stay on your device.

About HEIC

HEIC is iPhone's default photo format — efficient but limited compatibility.
  • First introduced in iOS 11 (2017) on iPhone 7 and later
  • Roughly 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality
  • Not natively supported on Windows, Android, or older browsers

Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Apple switched to HEIC by default to save storage — HEIC files are roughly half the size of JPEG at the same visual quality. The tradeoff is that most Windows software, older Macs, and many web services can't open them natively, so converting to JPG is often necessary for sharing.
