JPG to AVIF Converter

Shrink JPG files by ~50% by converting to AVIF. Modern web format.

Why convert JPG to AVIF?

AVIF produces files roughly 50% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality — a substantial win for page speed and hosting bandwidth. The tradeoff is compatibility: while modern browsers all support AVIF (Chrome 2020, Firefox 2021, Safari 2022), older browsers and many image editors still don't. Use AVIF for web delivery; keep JPG originals for archive. AVIF is encoded right in your browser via libavif WebAssembly.

About JPG

JPG is the universal photo format — lossy, broadly compatible.
  • JPG → AVIF is double-lossy; for archival use keep the original JPG
  • AVIF preserves visual quality at roughly half the file size
  • AVIF encoding is slower than JPG but only happens once

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF safe to use on my website?
Yes for modern browsers — global support is now well above 95% across Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. For maximum compatibility serve AVIF with a JPG fallback using the <picture> element.
